Thanks for shwopping!

M&S launched shwopping six weeks ago in a clothed street in East London, along with the support of Joanna Lumley – our new Plan A ambassador. Now, it’s time for an update and a big thank-you to everyone who has taken part so far. Since launch, over half a million used and unwanted items have been shwopped – the equivalent of eight items a minute! Every single one has been donated to Oxfam for re-sale, re-use or recycling.

 Shwop and save

This coming weekend,we’re asking our customers to help us reach a million donated items. From 21 – 24 June, those who come in and shwop will receive a £5 money-off voucher, redeemable when you spend £35 or more on fashion or home in-store* (T&Cs apply, see voucher for full details).

Joanna Lumley says: “I’m thrilled that UK shoppers have become UK shwoppers. We set out to change the way people shop and put an end to clothes going into landfill – half a million items is a great start.  We’re determined to give every item of clothing a future and help some of the world’s poorest people in the process. So, this weekend dig out that old t-shirt you haven’t worn for years and give it a new lease of life. Get Shwopping!”

Joanna Lumley Live Chat

We invited you to join us for a live video chat with Joanna on our Facebook page on Monday 18 June. Joanna answered your questions about our Shwopping initiative and you can watch the full video now below.

All M&S clothing stores now accept used and unwanted items of clothing from any brand, all year round. So come and shwop with us this weekend and save money on your next purchase as a little thank-you from us all at M&S!

What will you be shwopping this weekend? Have you been getting behind your local store by shwopping with them regularly? Do let us know by leaving a comment below.

*Vouchers are valid until 28th June and cannot be redeemed on schoolwear.
Please see voucher for full T&Cs.

Hi Sue, thanks for your comment.

Bras are definitely an important item for Oxfam and these can sometimes sold here in the UK or sent abroad. You can find out a bit more about what happens to some of the bras here: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/donate/inside-frip-ethique
