Joanna Lumley at M&S Orpington

We’ve thanked our customers for shwopping, but M&S staff have also been doing a fabulous job of telling customers how it all works and encouraging them to get involved. To help us thank them too, Joanna Lumley has been taking shwopping on the road – meeting the team at one of our top shwopping stores to hear the secrets of their success.

Joanna paid a surprise visit to meet the team at our Orpington store who’ve been setting the pace for most items shwopped, and most hits on Facebook. Seizing the baton from Store Manager Graham Bennett, Joanna led the team’s weekly meeting, took questions from employees, and described how proud she was to see everyone getting behind the scheme.

Despite only having 157 employees, Orpington has punched above its weight since the scheme launched, with employees taking the lead by bringing in their own items, and passing their enthusiasm onto our customers.

“Having Joanna visit was really fantastic; she was incredibly friendly and down-to-earth, and posed for photos with all of the colleagues”, says Emma Graham, GM Section Manager. “She had a serious message too though, that we need to make shwopping and recycling clothes a way of life. She pointed out that nowadays we don’t think twice about recycling bottles, and we should be doing the same with clothes too.”

The Orpington Gang (as Joanna fondly describes them) have made a great start in the shwopping stakes, but the campaign is here for the long-term, with over half a million items recycled nationwide in the first two months since launch. There is some hot competition at the top of the shwopping stores leaderboard too.
