COMPETITION NOW CLOSED

With the English domestic league nearing its conclusion and the European Championship just around the corner, the attention of many fans is now being turned towards the England national team. On June 6th the England squad will board a plane to Poland to battle it out with Europe’s finest, hoping to achieve glory and be crowned European Champions.

For kids, there’s nothing more exciting than supporting England at a major tournament. All fans remember that first tournament, the first one where they really got behind England – memorising all the players’ names, having kickabouts in the park between matches and wearing the replica kit, are all integral parts of the experience.

Best memory is England winning the world cup in 1966. I was just a little boy then, but I remember as if it was yesterday – great victory for England.

I went to watch England play at Old Trafford in June 2006 in a friendly against Jamaica, just before the squad set off for that year’s World Cup. I thoroughly enjoyed the event except for a missed penalty near the end where Crouch amateurishly chipped the ball over the bar only a few yards away from me. I wanted to see his Robot dance up close, but it was not to be, even though he got a hat trick in a 6-0 win.

David Beckham’s free kick against Greece for us to qualify for the European Championships, after running about 12 miles in the game.
