Twiggy for M&S Woman: Twiggy tells all

I’ve Twiggybeen happily modelling for M&S for the last six years, so when Kate Bostock approached me about getting more involved and producing a collection I thought it was a great idea. I’ve been designing collections across the world, but creating a range for M&S felt like a match made in heaven.

Growing up I was always obsessed with clothes and fashion, but not many people know that I can sew. In fact, sewing is my hobby and I love making clothes. I’m obsessed with fabric and understand the technicalities too – seams, buttons, zips… so I’ve been totally hands-on with the designs for the new range from day one. From picking out colours, prints and fabrics (the fabrics are fantastic!) to talking about trends and how we can cover them in the best way, my vision was always to create clothes that are flattering and feminine, as well as on trend, so that women feel confident when they wear them.

The new collection, called Twiggy for M&S Woman, is essentially a capsule collection featuring all the wardrobe staples that I love. There are some great jackets – versatile enough to wear with dresses, skirts and trousers – some brilliant prints, luxurious leather and a little sparkle, plus, some amazing skinny jeans. Most important for me, everything had to be comfortable, affordable, stylish and fun (fashion should always be fun), and I’m really pleased with the end result.

I get lots of letters from ladies, from 18 to 80 years old, saying “I’m not sure how to put this together”, so everything in the range is stylish and coordinated to ensure the pieces work together, making it easy to build outfits. I don’t believe in ageism in fashion, so my range really is for everyone. The pieces can be worn in different ways to suit your own style, no matter what your age. The whole range works together, but, if you buy a single item, it’s sure to fit with what you may already have in your wardrobe too – women don’t just start their wardrobe from scratch every season!

My inspirations for the range have come from lots of different places. I love vintage clothing and old movies or I might find a great colour or print in a painting while visiting an art gallery. I also keep up with trends by going to the shows in Paris, London and New York and by reading the latest fashion magazines.

I’m so lucky to have a brilliant team around me who are able to interpret my designs and ideas, they’re on my wavelength in terms of what I like and what I believe will work for the M&S lady. In fact, we’re already working on next season!

It does not matter if it’s Summer or Winter. I know that most middle age/older women prefer long sleeves on their tops and dresses, and material with stretch work better for sleeves. I search continuously on the best high street shops websites and find that anything with long sleeves is sold out before any other dresses. The manufacturers and retailers are missing out financially on this very high demand.

My mum has seen a lovely Linen-mix Fushia cardigan that Twiggy was wearing in an advert, she was wearing over i think a blue patterned top and she also had a sun hat on. Neither of these she can find, she even took the picture into her nearest store and they could not help. She would love to have this outfit for a wedding later this year. How can we find it? on the back of the leaflet it just gave the description and price. Help it would make her day.

I agree. The classic lines are often very frumpy, especially the elasticated trousers. I’m sure I will be glad of them one day, but at 68, I’m not ready for them yet. Can we have on-trend dresses with sleeves to cover the bingo wings please?

I too find it hard in Marks & Spencer to get something nice to fit, especially in larger sizes. I am a 22, and most ranges do nopt cater for that size.
The clasic range it out of date, and the tea shirts in that range stretch when washed and ironed too loose round the bottom edge.
I have purchased 2 pairs of trousers in the M & S women’s range and are very pleased with them.
Also too muchy for the oungsters in M&S, the older one’s are the one’s with the money.

I find it very hard to dress smart as I have got older I still like to look nice. I do not really like the classic range, I have bought many Items from that range but end up not wearing them, I do like buying, thats not the problem it is being able to buy, and put it on and it gives you that feel good fact, not that will do, my advice dont get old
