The first weekend of the M&S Shwop Lab is complete and it was a busy couple of days.

Top milliner Noel Stewart spent the weekend welcoming the public to his hat and headpiece workshops and everybody was embracing his colourful creations. Famed for working with the greatest in fashion, Roland Mouret, Hussein Chalayan and Erdem among others, Stewart takes inspiration from contemporary art and architecture to create his uniquely desirable hats.

Saturday kicked off at 10am when the first visitors arrived, and Noel and his two assistants started making bows from gifted donations. They draped jerseys and chiffons into wonderful creations that looked very ‘Gaga’.

After the first wave of bow hair-comb making, the design team and Shwop Lab visitors dived into more elaborate design territory and started making flat caps from tea towels and cotton bags.

Sunday was all about denim and baby clothes – both are materials that often get discarded. Noel transformed jeans and baby grows into an amazing array of fashion-forward headgear. Everyone was welcome to come and join in, rip up no longer useful clothes and re-use them to make new looks to take away. After the challenge the pieces that Noel made will be incorporated and exhibited within the space, so you can come down and check them out.

Noel said: “It’s been a really fun weekend. The possibilities are endless when it comes to recycling and reusing unwanted clothes. Fabrics are beautiful and precious – they should be treasured rather than binned. There have been some pretty fabulous creations over the past couple of days. I think people have been really surprised by what they have been able to achieve.”
