The Marks and Spencer Shwop Lab has hosted an open studio over the past two days, with the public getting a unique chance to witness Canada-born designer Michelle Lowe-Holder’s ingenious creativity.

On day one, Michelle set out to create her favourite new accessory, the peplum belt, with material from discarded boiler suits and men’s shirts. Working up a mini collection of six unique pieces, the designer called on her eye for detail and creative vision to marry the different materials into a homogenous collection.

Moving onto creating an entire outfit on day two, Michelle introduced a seamstress into the process who was tasked to sew a dress that would go with the peplum pieces. Using discarded floral fabric, Michelle and her team created a wonderful piece that’s as much ready-to-wear as it is uniquely vintage.

Michelle’s ethos is very much based on ecology – as all her collections come to life through sustainable and ethical practices of zero waste, upcyling by using ends of lines and “cabbage” (scraps from previous collections). UK production has become integral to the label as well.

A perfect fit for The Shwop Lab and another figurehead in the eco movement, this week came to a satisfying conclusion with Michelle Lowe-Holder.
