M&S sustainable suit

Our first sustainable suit will be launched in September 2012 and priced at Ā£349. Mark Sumner, M&S Plan A Expert, commented, ā€œThis a huge step forwards for the industry; it is the first time such an intricate garment has been made of sustainable materials, and as well as being one of the greenest garments available on the high street, it is incredibly stylish and something we hope our customers will be proud to wear.ā€

The different elements of the suit include:

- Wool – the suit is made from organic wool which is fully traceable back to the farms from where it is produced. In addition, all of the chemicals used in the production of the wool fibre are Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) approved, to reflect the fact that as the fibre has been organically produced.
- Lining – made from recycled plastic bottles.
- Canvas (used inside the main body of the suit) – made from recycled polyester.
- Buttons – reclaimed buttons.
- Pockets and waistband – made from reclaimed fabric.
- Labels – all of the labels inside the suit, even the ā€˜Care Instructions’, have been made from recycled polyester.

Remember, for your chance to win one of our sustainable suits, simply leave a comment below telling us how many sheep you think need to be sheared to produce just one of them.

I believe it to be about 0.375 sheep per suit.

I’d say one sheep (or less) per suit.

This is a great idea, well done to you. I can see that you are not claiming that it is perfect and I appreciate that you’ve made a great start and want to improve. I hope to see much more of this in future!

What do you think about ‘microplastics’ – the theory that washing artificial fibres such as polyester contributes to a build up of microscopic plastic particles that pollute our beaches, oceans and our food chain? This may be something else to consider in future…

    Thanks

I think the wool for 1 sheep would make 10 of these suits so I’ll say 0.1 sheep per suit :o )

I think one (merino) sheep is usually needed for making one suit.

My guess is that it will take only one sheep as the bulk of the suit is from recycled materials.
