We launched our shwopping campaign in April this year and we’ve already seen over 1 million items donated. Today we have announced a very exciting development which has been made possible by your support. We’ve launched the first product made from unwanted clothing donated by our customers!
The ‘Shwop Coat’ (below) is made from shwopped wool donated by customers in M&S stores or via our charity partner Oxfam. The coat is better value for the environment and, at £89, it is half the cost it would be if made from virgin wool so our customers save money too! The coat will go on sale in selected stores across UK and online from 10 October.

Joanna Lumley, our Plan A ambassador, models the Shwop Coat.
What the coat’s made of: 63% Wool / 26% nylon / 8% Cashmere / 3% Other fibres
Mark Sumner, M&S Plan A Expert, told us: “The Shwop Coat marks a huge step forwards for creating a sustainable future for fashion. It’s also great for our customers who can not only see what shwopping their old and unwanted clothes can lead to, but also get their hands on a stylish coat that looks great but costs less.”
How the process works:
- Items are shwopped in store and then donated to Oxfam
- Clothes that are unsuitable for resale are shipped to Italy, reduced to fibre form, cleaned and made into new fabric before being sold on to M&S clothing suppliers
- M&S then use the recycled fabric in the production of the Shwop Coat

Have you shwopped yet? Our ongoing campaign encourages everyone who shops at M&S to give an old or unwanted item of clothing back every time they buy something new. Through Shwopping, each item donated is re-sold in Oxfam, re-used or recycled and we hope the Shwop Coat gives our readers and customers new inspiration to get involved and see what’s possible.
