Some women are blessed with knowing exactly what suits their body shape, but for the rest of us a few handy tips can be a great help. That’s why we invited five fabulous fashion bloggers to our press showroom to explore our dresses collection and pick out the styles that flatter their figure best. We had our assistant buyer for dresses, Barbara Bobadilla, on hand to offer some expert advice too. They’ve all shared their style tips in a series of videos and a handy guide, available online at marksandspencer.com.

We were there as the bloggers picked out their favourite styles, so read on to find out which dresses they liked best…

Gemma, Big Girls Browse

Gemma from Big Girls Browse

Gemma is a fashion writer and ambassador for curves and her favourite style of dresses are ’50s inspired which is why she loved the Spotted Hem Prom Dress (above left). Gemma also tried our Secret Supportâ„¢ Circle Print Dress (above right) which looked super stylish. A top tip for this style is not to be tempted to go up a size, it will feel snug but the support is what smooths and streamlines the silhouette. We also thought Gemma looked fab in this Abstract Print Dress.

Muireann, Bangs and a Bun

Muireann from Bangs and a Bun

Muireann is a writer and dedicated runner. For her athletic rectangle shape, choosing dresses is about creating curves so the Peplum Shift Dress (above left) and Cap Sleeve Belted Dress (above right) were perfect for her.

Amanda, The Women's Room

Amanda from The Women’s Room

Amanda writes a lifestyle blog for the 35+ woman. She would describe her body shape as rectangle and is conscious to conceal her tummy. Amanda was quick to grill Barbara on what style of dresses are most popular with our customers (jersey, mock-wrap dresses if you were wondering) and also what fashion-forward styles are gaining popularity (skater dresses are the one to watch). We think Amanda looked amazing in the Oriental Floral Print Shift Dress (above right) with clever contour line detailing. Very feminine and chic.

Kate, Wit Wit Woo

Kate from WitWitWoo

Kate is an English graduate and mum to two boys. Her body shape is strawberry which sometimes means she has to go up a dress size to accomodate her fuller bust. The Secret Support™ Circle Print Dress (above left) gave Kate a great, sexy shape while thecolouring of the Bold Floral Maxi Dress (above right) worked fabulously with her vibrant hair and lipstick.

Harriet, Where is Harriet

Harriet from Where is Harriet?

Harriet works in finance and loves to shop. She’s petite with an hourglass body shape. Top of her shopping list was the Colour Block Sateen Shift Dress (above right) which has clever contour lines to enhance her shapely silhouette. The dark belt for the Linen Blend Striped Dress (above left) is a clever style trick to draw the eye to the narrowest part of her body too.

Why are there never any style tips for short people? Especially for short “apple” shapes… it’s very hard to find good fitting clothes – the petite range can help with leg and arm lengths, but we are not all skinny petites! Please help.. I am 4ft 11″ and a size 18.

Hi Judy, thank you for your comment.

I’ve spoken to our assistant dresses buyer, Barbara, who says:

“A petite apple shape usually looks great in shawl collar or V-neck dresses, wrap dresses, panelled skirts and a-line shape dresses made of soft fabrics. Accessories above the bust line and below the hip line are also a good style choice. A heel can also work wonders.

It’s best to avoid stiff, textured fabrics, clothes with large pockets, tightly-fitted dresses or large details on your bust or tummy area.”

      We do hope that helps.

      Regards
