Described as ‘the best of British suitmaking without the associated cost’ by Shortlist Magazine, the Savile Row Inspired collection is our freshly launched, exclusive collaboration with award winning Savile Row tailor, Richard James. The 24 piece range – comprising suiting, shirts and ties – is understated, exceptionally well cut and very, very British – everything you would expect from Savile Row. However, as Shortlist points out, we’re bringing you the Row’s trademark quality at M&S prices.

Savile Row is the spiritual home of the suit, a byword for tailoring excellence and even the term ‘bespoke’ is said to have originated on the Row. Nestled in the middle of this short street in London’s Mayfair, albeit in the largest premises, is the Richard James’ shop, design studio and showroom. James is often referred to as a member of Savile Row’s ‘New Establishment’ and his progressive take on tailoring has won him plenty of awards, including the coveted Menswear Designer of the Year award from the British Fashion Council.

Richard James lets us in on his style tips:

Integral to the Richard James design philosophy is a commitment to detail and an unmistakably bold use of colour – both of these elements can be seen in abundance in our Savile Row Inspired collection as James personally oversaw the design and development of the range. Look out for fine fabrics, brilliantly coloured jacket linings and sharply tailored fits, and, even better, all of the cloths were manufactured in the UK.

The best move Marks and Spencer have made in recent years both in terms of quality of the stunning fabrics and detail (e.g. horn style buttons). It is the best cut I have seen in off the peg suits today!
It has the ability to make well proportioned people look good.
The only gripe I had was that there isn’t more of a selection in the sharper Peaked Lapel model.

It is the first move in the right direction to regain the brand Marks and Spencers were known for in a 21st Century way. Next stop, some decent ties?

      Hi Josh,

We’re glad you’re a fan. Out of interest, do you have a favourite suit from the collection?

We’ll be adding to thr range throughout May – and then again towards the end of summer. You’ll also be please to know that we’ll be adding a few ties too!

      Regards,

My current favourite suit is the 2 button Indigo suit. The material is very nice and the slanted pockets and edged stitching all lend to a very sharp suit. The colour is perfectly suited to the English summer where one day it can be beautiful and sunny bringing out the sharkskin texture, whereas the next day it can be overcast.

    Kind regards,

    Josh

This is excellent on so many levels. I have a couple of RJ suits from his Saville Row store and they are beautiful. I appreciate I am fortunate as not everyone can which is why this is so good. The collection looks as good as any you will see anywhere. I have just returned from Venice and they are so proud that their tailoring is done in the country. The English have a unique history in tailoring and the quality of our workmanship is unsurpassed. We still have the best shoe makers in the world. Saville Row is still revered the world over. I enjoyed reminding the Italians we were the pioneers of sartorial elegance and it shows how they have copied “our” slimline look the modern Italian man looks for.

Of course I would have to see the quality before commenting but if it feels as good s it looks, this could be a winner. One minor point. RJ is well known for colours. I think the suits could have had more colour range.

The fantastic range of suits, requires a better range of shirts. A proper cut away collar, not the one currently on offer,a button down collar, all in the fabrics used for the £39.50 range of shirts. We also require the styling used in slim fit shirts , given over to regular fit shirts. In essence, we well dressed older men , want the styling back.
