The bomber jacket was born out of necessity – pilots flying planes with open cockpits depended on the thick leather jacket with snug cuffs to keep them protected from the elements. Fast forward to 2012 and the reinvented bomber has become the essential summer jacket.

In 1917 the US Army began issuing flight jackets to its pilots, these would have zip fastenings, high collars and be made out of heavy duty leather – the original bomber jacket. Whilst still the preserve of the military, the bomber jacket went through several iterations, from being lined with sheepskin to being made purely out of cotton or nylon.

This summer, bomber jackets have been flying off our shelves and are proving to be a big trend right across the high street. Robert Johnston, associate editor of GQ, says of the bomber’s charm: “It’s express fashion” adding “Bomber jackets are really easy to wear because you can just shove them on with jeans and a T-shirt. Plus they have pockets, which makes them practical”.
