Catwalk make-up trends for autumn

When a designer sends a fashion collection down the catwalk, you can be sure that the models’ hair and make-up was a top consideration and carefully chosen to complement the clothes they’re wearing. New make-up trends often emerge in this high-fashion arena, and although some are quite ‘out there’ (take this season’s orange eyeshadow and jewelled eyebrows, for example), many of these looks can be easily recreated at home.

Whether you choose to take direct inspiration from the autumn catwalks, or adapt the looks to suit your own style, take a look at four fabulous beauty trends below.

Victoria Beckham catwalk

The striking lip

Strong lips appear every season, but it’s the hue that changes. For autumn, go for a vibrant poppy red as seen at Victoria Beckham (above) and House of Holland. Try Autograph Moisture Rich Lipstick in Red, £8.50. Or opt for a more fashion-forward chestnut brown or burgundy to create a rich autumnal look, such as Limited Collection Lipstick in deep Plum, £5. Keep the rest of your make-up minimal and let your lips stand out.

Lanvin make-up look

Feline flicks

Eyeliner made a real statement on the catwalks at Lanvin (above) and Erdem. Emulate 1960s starlets with heavy winged eyeliner, flicked out at the outer corners of the eyes. This style requires a steady hand, so give it a few practice runs to get to know your eye shape and hone your technique. Get the look with our Limited Collection Liquid Eye Liner, £4.

Oscar de la Renta make-up look

A dewy glow

Sometimes less is more, and that was definitely the case at Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta (above), where the look was all about a perfect base. Highlighter was added to flawless skin for a fresh, dewy finish, creating a pretty and ethereal look that works beautifully for everyday. Create a gorgeously radiant base with Murad’s Dewy Finish Skin Perfecting Primer, £29.50, with light-enhancing minerals.

Versace beauty look

Grungy gothic

Dark eyes and pale skin created a dramatic contrast for autumn/winter. In New York Marc Jacobs went for heavy kohl-rimmed eyes for his models, while Jean Paul Gaultier and Roksanda Illincic did their own take on the grunge make-up trend. Versace Couture’s make-up look (above) stood out most, and although the clothes were for SS13, the face is definitely very ‘now’. Recreate that all-important dark, gothic eye with the easy-to-blend Autograph Soft Kohl Eyeliner, £6, or Pür Minerals Eye Pencil with built-in smudger, £14.
